Function:
The Cute Dinobot

Voice Actor:
Michael Bell

First Appearance:
"War of the Dinobots"

Nightwind's Words of Wisdom:

You know, if not for the third season that Grimlock dominates, I think it'd be safe to say that it was actually Swoop who got the most airtime of the Dinobots. Think about it! He got to rescue Spike (twice!) in "Dinobot Island." He got to spot the Decepticons on the island first in "DI." He was ultimately responsible for getting all of the Dinobots out of the tar pit in "DI." And then, of course, there's "Desertion of the Dinobots," the second half of which has lots o' Swoop and very little of the other Dinobots.

And then he and the other Dinobots, other than Grimlock, all but disappear in the third season! Poopy! That ticked me off...

Besides that, though, Swoop always struck me as the...well, the brainiest of the Dinobots, for some reason. He talks more correctly than the others, for one thing, and, from what we saw, he's certainly more social than the other four. It takes half a brain to interact socially with others.

And, geez, Swoop's just...cute! As in, "Let me at those cheeks so I can pinch 'em" cute. If he was an animal, he'd be one of those adorable, big-eyed bushbabies. You just want to pick him up and cuddle him, dangit! Yep, Swoop has none of the stand-offishness, none of the aloof agressiveness of, in particular, Slag, Snarl, and even Grimlock. He's just all cute, all the time. And of the five Dinobots, I think he'd fit in best with the Autobots...if they'd but give him a chance. Which they don't, of course. But...that's what fanfic is for, yeeeeeesssssss...

The Official Word:

Profile: Making a spectacular descent from the sky, Swoop watches with unhidden glee as his enemies scatter in terror before his looming presence. And that's just the way he likes it because he knows fear is a more effective weapon than any equipment he carries. Fear is also his greatest friend. His ability to cause it in others is the sole comfort he derives from the form generally considered the most horrifying of all the Dinobots. Even his comrades shy away from him. And that is Swoop's tragedy. Four million years ago, when the Ark adapted his Autobot body to resemble that of a pterodactyl's, he gladly accepted the disguise as his contribution to the Autobot cause. Little did he know back then that the good-natured, kind mechanoid that he was- and still is- would be disguised as well.

Abilities: In flying mode, Swoop can soar up to 250 mph. Under each wing he carries an air-to-air missile launcher. Each missile is the equivalent of 5,000 lbs. of TNT. Although the missiles have a range of 8 miles and are very accurate, Swoop's specialty is swooping down to low altitudes and releasing them virtually point blank at their targets, and then speeding away. In Autobot mode he can also use the launchers, as well as a thermal sword, which, by heating up to temperatures of 4,000 degrees centigrade, can slice through most materials by melting through them as it passes.

Weaknesses: Although he's extremely maneuverable and has great endurance due to low fuel consumption, Swoop is vulnerable to enemy firepower due to the relatively fragile nature of his wings.

Miscellaneous:

Best Place to Swoop-Watch:
Definitely "Desertion of the Dinobots." He gets practically the entire second part of it all to himself. Well, him, Spike, and Carly, that is. But a lot of Swoop, and he's really cute in it, too. ;)
