Nightwind's Words of Wisdom:
What is it with Autobots with cute little British-y accents? Cute, aren't they? Well, I think so, anyway...
I like Hoist. He's the star of an episode that I'd really love but that I'm obliged to hate, that being "Hoist Goes Hollywood." I mean, I love the episode. To me, it's a laugh-riot and a major part of that is Hoist's bewilderment with the whole Hollywood thing. ("Bagel?" Hee hee hee hee hee...) But I have to hate it because of Megatron, you see, and the evil things he does to my man Starscream in that episode all undeserved, mind you! But this isn't about Screamer. This is about Hoist, yeeeessss...
Anyway, Hoist's amusing in "Hoist Goes Hollywood." I like him, as well, in "The Master Builders," where he plays supportive second fiddle to an obsessed Grapple. I like him in "Auto Berserk," too. And in "Decepticon Raider" he's OK, too. He suffers there because he's stuck with Warpath, though, of whom I'm not all that fond... Anyway, all of this is sort of ironic because I tend to love or at least like those episodes, but I don't really have any strong opinions either way about Hoist himself. I guess the best I can say about him is that he's...inoffensive? In all honesty, I don't think about Hoist that often. He's just kind of there to me. Actually, most of the Season 2 Autobots are that way, for me, other than maybe Beachcomber and Perceptor, now that I think about it. Hmmmmm...
But...Well, you've just gotta love Hoist's little yellow "bloomers," at least, yes? Hee hee hee hee hee...
The Official Word:
Profile: Everybody must submit to his maintenance schedule, even Optimus Prime, and no excuse is ever good enough for Hoist. And he has a good reason for being so strict: even though his job usually keeps him away from the front lines, he knows how important it is that all the Autobot warriors are operating at peak eflficiency when they engage in battle. He genuinely enjoys his job, as indicated by the jovial manner in which he performs it. And he's good at his job, too; whether the problem is a full engine overhaul or the smallest leaky gasket, his comrades are confident that Hoist will find it.
Abilities: As a tow truck, Hoist can haul up to 400,000 pounds. In robot mode, he is one of the strongest of the Autobots. From his wrist sockets, he can launch heat-seeking missiles up to 4.5 miles. The full spectrum multi-sensor module he wears behind his head can determine an object's composition, density, tensile strength, energy properties and often even its function with a mere sweep of its triple beams. The beams have an operating range of 1200 yards, making Hoist an effective and valued scout at times.
Weaknesses: Hoist's dedication to his job sometimes blinds him to the precedence that armed conflict often takes over it. He lacks speed in vehicular mode, and has a high fuel consumption rate.
Miscellaneous:
Best Place to Hoist-Watch:
"Hoist Goes Hollywood" is his "star turn," of course. In more ways than one. And he's fun in that episode, yes. But I also tend to like they way that he and Grapple play off of each other in "The Master Builders."
Nightwind's Favorite Hoist Quotes:
"Bagel?"
~Hoist obviously hasn't been in Hollywood long enough if he doesn't know what a bagel is... ;)
