Nightwind's Words of Wisdom:

Screw Galvatron! Folks, here's the true leader of the Decepticons in the 3rd season of the cartoon. Yes, the power behind the throne, Cyclonus is...and I love him for that. Yes, I'm sick of glory-hound Decepticons, the loud, the brash "I am mighty!" kind of Decepticons, particularly when it comes to the leaders. They're a dime a dozen. But Cyclonus, my friends...Cyclonus is different. Very different, indeed...

Seems to me that in Cyclonus the third-season writers sought to create a Decepticon second-in-command who was as different from Starscream as possible, just as they sought to make Rodimus Prime wholly different than Optimus Prime. Instead of conniving, backstabbing, treacherous, but ultimately short-sighted Starscream (Whom I adore, don't get me wrong!), we have loyal, intelligent, and anything-but-short-sighted Cyclonus.

He's level-headed. He can be devious. He can be violent. Yet, he also has something of a code of honor, most noticeably in the episode "The Killing Jar," a great vehicle both for Cyclonus and for Ultra Magnus. In fact I'd say that, if not for the minor fact that they're on opposite sides of the war, Cyc and Magnus would get along very well. Both are soldiers. Both are intelligent, but low-key. Both hold something of a "power behind the throne" position in their respective armies. I can see them sitting down and comparing notes and complaints about their respective "charges."

And there's another angle that I really like about Cyclonus. He's loyal to Galvatron (Imagine that! A loyal Decepticon second-in-command!). He's so loyal that, instead of ripping the leadership of the Decepticons out from under the infirm Galvatron's feet — which I believe he could easily do, especially because I get the sense that most of the Decepticons would rather he lead, anyway — Cyclonus does everything he can to help Galvatron maintain his position of power, although his efforts don't always turn out exactly as he'd planned. (See "Webworld.") At the same time, he maintains his own position of power, because Galvatron trusts him and, other than when he's in a completely loopy phase, Galvatron listens to Cyclonus. There's an almost symbiotic relationship there. Galvatron has the charisma and the conquering spirit that Cyclonus lacks while Cyclonus has the clarity-of-thought — not to mention the sanity — that Galvatron lacks. They're a good team. It's about time the Decepticons had an upper echelon command structure that has it together...er, usually. In general, though, I'd say that between Cyclonus and Galvatron, the Decepticons are in good hands...usually.

One question remains in my mind, however. Who was Cyclonus, pre-Unicron? Unicron created two Cycs, after all, one from what was left of Skywarp and one from what was left of Bombshell. One of them was subsequently destroyed during the course of the movie. Most fans seem to believe that the "Skywarp Cyclonus" was the one who was destroyed, mostly, I think, because Skywarp was usually characterized as something of a dimwit, which Cyclonus definitely is not. Me...I tend to think differently. And no, it's not just because I like Skywarp a whole lot better than I like Bombshell, though of course that doesn't hurt matters. So why do I think this, then? Mostly it's because of Cyclonus' relationship with Scourge, who was definitely Thundercracker. Of all of the pre-movie Decepticons, just about the only two who were consistently shown as friendly, other than within the combiner teams, were those two. To me, it's of no surprise that, from the get-go, Cyclonus and Scourge get along quite well. To me, it's merely a continuation of a previous relationship, you see. Thundercracker and Bombshell, on the other hand, would have no reason to be chummy and cooperative with each other. Of course, one could say that their chumminess was simply programmed by Unicron...but I choose not to believe that. If nothing else, for me, it helps to keep Skywarp and Thundercracker "alive." And for a die-hard fan of the three original Decepticon jets who's trying to appreciate a segment of the series that lacks them, that can only be a good thing.

The Official Word:
Ack! Don't even pay attention to this thing! I don't know who this thing's supposed to be describing, but it sure as heck isn't my much-adored Cyclonus! :P

Profile: Cyclonus is a huge and emotionless air-warrior metamorphosized from parts of dead Decepticons and remnants by Unicron. Like Galvatron, he derives vast resources of power and energy through Unicron and so can draw on strength in direct proportion to its need- always being able to become stronger than his opponents because of his access to the infinite reservoir of power that Unicron represents. A dedicated destructor, Cyclonus transforms into a gigantic multi-engine (and perhaps multi-wing) jet fighter. His firepower remains intact and is augmented by an incendiary bomb rack. Cyclonus is capable of an additional transformation, trimming his wings and tail back to assume a space-worthy rocket mode for interstellar pursuit and warfare. He has no personality, no interests other than conquests for the sake of Unicron, and no weakness.

Abilities: In jet fighter mode, Cyclonus is equipped with nuclear-powered turbine engines which enable him to reach speeds greater than Mach 2. In robot mode, he carries an oxidating laser that fuses an enemy robot's internal mechanisms.

Best Place to Cyclonus-Watch:
By far, "The Killing Jar." He rules in that episode! :D "Webworld" would be a close runner-up, though..
